...My first attempts at training my own hunting dogs properly were, I gotta confess, disastrous.

 

I remember my first hunting dog like it was yesterday. I named him Trooper. He was a coonhound. The dog was young, eager and excitable. Just like most dogs are.

 

I started trying to teach him the simple things first. You know things you try to teach any young dog at first. Like sitting on command...getting him to follow me...retrieve for me. I'd throw sticks for him to bring back to me.

 

He would listen to the commands I gave him, fetch things for me and bring them back when I commanded him to do so. Things were going well. He and I were doing well - or so I thought at the time – and after a few weeks I thought he was ready.

 

I’d decided to take Trooper hunting coons. Just me and him.To get him comfortable in the hunting world.

 

I was excited and I couldn't wait to get out there. In fact I could hardly sleep the night before. When I did nod off I was dreaming about all the 'Coons me and Trooper were going to track down.

 

But instead of Trooper listening to the commands I’d been teaching him, he went haring off into the woods, barking, scaring off any coons which may have been around.

 

He simple ignored every command I had trained him to listen to. I got so mad – I ended up firing a shot over my dog’s head. This only made things worse and he ran off. I finally found him - having looked every where for him.

 

I went home and wondered what was the problem. Trooper was a hunting dog breed. His pedigree was from a long line of successful hunting dogs. He was enthusiastic but something obviously wasn't right. He should be a natural at hunting.

 

Of course I could have sent him away to some fancy pants dog trainer. But the cost...

 

...The Thieving Rascal Wanted A Thousand Bucks

 

What did they think? Money grew on trees? And even then there was no guarantee Trooper would be fully trained when he came back.

 

After thinking about it I tried a different training manual. I followed these instructions to the letter so that Trooper would become a hunting dog I'd be proud of.

 

The next time I took Trooper out I decided to stalk a deer with some of my hunting pals. I convinced them to leave their dogs at home as I wanted to show them how good my dog was at hunting.

 

We spent hours scouring the woods and surrounding areas for any signs of deer. Finally we got on the trail of one. Trooper did his bit. I was well pleased. Trooper put his nose down and excitedly we followed the trail. And there he was!

 

On the horizon. Half way up a slope. A decent looking stag with huge antlers. He was a beauty! We stalked the deer slowly – for what seemed like hours. Until we got close enough for a shot.

 

Then suddenly without warning Trooper decided to start barking. And that's the last we saw of the stag. He took off like an olympic runner.

 

I was furious. Trooper had let me down. I whacked him across his back. He'd made me look a complete fool in front of my hunting buddies.

 

Then there was the time that I was out in a shooting party. We were shooting squirrels. Some of the other hunters had their well trained hunting dogs with them. But as soon as I let Trooper off his lead to retrieve a squirrel I'd shot...that was it. He ran off, barking in the wood. In fact, he caused so much havoc that the shoot had to be cancelled.

 

I was embarrassed. My cheeks burned with shame. And I just wanted to, well, if I could get my hands on my dog, literally KILL him.

 

At the last hunt there were mutterings from fellow shooters that I should go hunting by myself. And forget going with anyone else. After all, my dog had ruined the day. It was like I was being made an outcast.

 

It was at that point my hunting pal Rick said “You ought to train your dogs to a proper hunting standard. Or get rid of

it. ”

 

Things had reached rock-bottom. I decided I was going to have to give Trooper away. And get myself a new dog. Trouble was despite his hunting faults I'd grown to love that damn dog. He made it impossible for me to give him away. perhaps I was too soft.

 

But that's when my luck suddenly changed.

 

I got invited to a different hunt at the last moment. Friend of a friend sorta thing, they’d had a heap of cancellations last minute and were desperate to keep the numbers up. So, me being mad keen on hunting I didn't need no second invitation.

 

BUT, there was no way I was taking that critter Trooper. I was going dogless. I couldn't depend on him. And I didn't went him letting me down again in front of a crowd of strangers.

 

It was a great day's hunt. We had deer...coons...you name it and we shot it. And the dogs worked perfectly.

 

Anyway, I got talking to one of the hunters. And naturally the conversation turned to dogs. I was complimenting him on how well trained his dog was. and I explained my troubles I'd had with Trooper. That's when he laughed and said he had knew the secrets which could...
